The Mask You Live In

In collaboration with Royal Society of Arts, The UK Faculty of Public Health, The Wellcome Trust and Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities, the Good Lad Initiative and The American Public Health Association.
The documentary presents the personal narratives of young boys/ men and follows their struggles to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. It features experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media, exploring how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class, and circumstance. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men. Written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
After the screening there will be a panel discussion with the film producer who is visiting Oxford on her way back from Cannes after being awarded the Glass Lion Award at the Cannes Lion Film Festival 2015. She will be talking about her experience in film making and campaigning. With more than 4 million views on YouTube for The Mask You Live In trailer it is promising to be an event not to miss.
BIO – JENNIFER SIEBEL NEWSOM, Director/Producer/Writer
Jennifer Siebel Newsom s a filmmaker, CEO, advocate, and thought leader. A Stanford graduate in Business she moved into film making. In 2011 she directed and produced the award-winning documentary Miss Representation. As a result of Miss Representation’s powerful impact, Jennifer launched The Representation Project, a non-profit organization that uses film and media as a catalyst for cultural transformation. Her second film, The Mask You Live In, had its world premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and explores how America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men, and society at large. She also executive produced the Emmy Award-Winning and Academy Award-Nominated documentary The Invisible War and is an executive producer on the documentary The Hunting Ground. She is currently in production on her third film, The Great American Lie.
